Max is a professor for Experimental Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science at Uni Tokyo and head of a research group at RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science. He's an expert for transport measurements in magnetic materials and long-term partner of ENG Masell with numerous collaborations. We're looking forward to his talk!

Our group is represented at the first international conference on 3D nanomagnetism! At 3DMAG Sanjay will give a talk presenting his latest research on unconventional hopfions in synthetic chiral magnets. Jan is busy networking.

Nicolai and Jan have published a proceeding-article for Nicolai's talk at Intermag 2026. We discuss that the skyrmion Hall effect, observed in various theoretical works, is merely a numerical artifact of the discretization of Zhang-Li spin-transfer torque. Too bad. A detailed manuscript identifying interesting physics in this numerical error will follow soon.

MAGN3D welcomes its latest member: Max Riedel🎉🥳 Max will support us as a Master student. He attended our lecture "Theory of Magnetism" and will now write his Master thesis in our group. he will revive our GPU-Metropolis-MonteCarlo code, searching for Hopfion-phases as thermodynamic ground states.

We welcome Maurice Colling as our guest in the ENG Masell! In 2023 Maurice wrote his Master thesis under supervision of Jan. Now he is a PhD student in the group of Prof. Dennis Meier at NTNU Trondheim. Maurice gives two talks: (i) About the orientation of the helix and novel topological defects and (ii) about efficient use of AI-Agents.

In collaboration with the group of Prof. Jonathan Leliaert at Uni Ghent, Nicolai and Jan wrote and tested an extension for MuMax+. Adding a new object class for d-wave altermagnets, it is now possible to natively simulate the magnetization dynamics in MuMax+. This functionality has already been added to be main branch of MuMax+. The preprint is uploaded on arXiv and submitted to a journal for peer review.

The results of Maurice's Master thesis under supervision of Jan have been published! In collaboration with our partners from the group of Prof. Max Hirschberger at Uni Tokyo and RIKEN, we were able to demonstrate that the magnetic texture in the Weyl semimetal GdAlSi is a seemingly perfect spin-cycloid, stabilized by RKKY-interaction.

Using a simple model, Somasree and Jan calculated how the helical phase orients in a chiral magnet whose size is only a few helical wavelengths. The analytical and numerical results were complemented by experiments from the group of Prof. Dennis Meier (Uni Duisburg-Essen and NTNU Trondheim), showing excellent agreement. The preprint is now available on arXiv and submitted to a journal for peer review.

In collaboration with Dr. Fehmi S. Yasin, Jan contributed a chapter to the 2026 Skyrmionics Roadmap. Numerous prominent authors shed light on interesting future topics in the context of magnetic skyrmions. We focus on S4- and D2d-symmetric antiskyrmion-hosting materials. The preprint is on arXiv and submitted for peer review.

In collaboration with a large team around the group of Prof. Max Hirschberger from Uni Tokyo and RIKEN, Jan could contribute to the first identification of a metallic p-wave magnet. By doping, the wavelength of an atomic scale helix is tuned to precisely six sites of a breathing Kagome lattice. This magnetic order fulfills the symmetry requirements for an odd-parity (p-wave) magnet.

MAGN3D welcomes its latest member: Somasree Bhattacharjee🎉🥳 Somasree will support us as a PhD student. She wrote her Master thesis in the reknown IIT (ISM) Dhanbad in India in the group of Dr. Ritwik Mondal on spintronics in the terahertz regime. Somasree will now investigate the static properties of magnetic textures in systems with edges.

In collaboration with our long-term partner Dr. Fehmi S. Yasin (Oak Ridge National Lab), we have published a proceeding in "Microscopy and Microanalysis". Fehmi presented this work at the conference, how his experimental 4D-STEM measurements of current-induced magnetization in FNPP fit our theoretical estimates.

MAGN3D welcomes its latest member: Dr. Sanjay Ashok 🎉🥳 Sanjay will support us as a postdoctoral researcher. He did his PhD at RPTU in the Rethfeld group, becoming an expert for magnetization dynamics on the ultrafast (femto-second) time scale. Sanjay will investigate novel topological agnetic textures in three spatial dimensions.

MAGN3D welcomes its first non-trivial member: Nicolai Bechler 🎉🥳 Nicolai will support us as a PhD student. After doing his Master in physics at ETH Zürich, he returned to the group where he wrote his Bachelor thesis. His previous work in our group on helitronics is recognized by the community and his PhD project on the dynamics of topological magnetic textures connects smoothly.

Today, the Emmy-Noether group MAGN3D officially starts with its first member: Dr. Jan Masell. He is the group leader but obviously also needs a contract, so here we go.

Today, we got great news: Jan Masell's application for the independent Emmy-Noether junior research group MAGN3D has been granted! The total budget is 2.4 Million Euros over a total duration of 3+3 years.
